Event Details

Audubon Canyon Ranch protects our natural and human communities through land preservation, nature education, and conservation science. Audubon Canyon Ranch acts as guardian of a system of nature preserves spanning 26 properties in Marin, Sonoma and Lake counties. These 5,000 acres provide significant habitat to wildlife and have been placed in our care by generous donors to steward and protect in perpetuity. ACR works to improve global environmental health by conserving and stewarding valuable natural resources, managing for ecological resiliency, providing scientific solutions to ecosystem management, and teaching generations of conservationists in ways that strengthen natural and human communities.

The training will be hosted by ACR’s 1,000 acre Martin Griffin Preserve in Stinson Beach, CA. The preserve is home to more than twenty-five species of mammals, over ninety species of landbirds, thirteen species of reptile, and eight species of amphibian. Mixed evergreen forests blanket slopes overlooking the Bolinas Lagoon. Open hillsides support grasslands and coastal scrub, while freshwater habitats nestle in canyon floors.

The next Martin Griffin Preserve docent training will take place on 24 Wednesdays from September 2018 - March 2019. Docents receive 120 hours of core training in natural history, ecology and nature interpretation for children. After graduating from the core training, docents receive a rich menu of lifelong learning opportunities, including lectures, field trips, crafting and special events.

Upon completing certification requirements, participants are eligible for four academic credits through UC Davis Extension for an additional nominal fee.

2018 Course Dates:  Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m.– 2:00 p.m., beginning September 5, 2018 through March 6, 2019 (holiday exceptions). Trainees also observe experienced docents on the trails and in the classroom.
