Are you raising livestock?
Interested in wildlife?
Wonder how the two can co-exist?
Join us for a workshop at Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue (SCWR) to explore ways to co-exist with carnivores while successfully raising domestic animals.
The workshop will include:
See the big picture by understanding the role that mountain lions, as well as other wildlife, play in the ecosystem. Consider why it is important to maintain a healthy ecosystem.
Get to know your local wildlife through a visit to SCWR’s Educational Exhibit which houses wild animals that cannot be released back into the wild. This is an excellent opportunity to observe and learn about the abilities, habits and needs of our local wildlife.
Be a detective and learn to recognize scat, tracks and other signs, so you can figure out which wild animal has been in your yard. We will work through common scenarios to practice these skills.
Solve some common issues. Using your refined understanding of wildlife and their abilities, we’ll work together to solve some common issues that people have when caring for domestic animals in an area with wildlife. We will draw inspiration from the on-site Predator Exclusion and Educational Program (PEEP) Barnyard, which demonstrates various wildlife friendly techniques to protect livestock and gardens.
Follow up. We would love to challenge all participants to do a follow up project at home, critically examining your set-up and finding ways to improve it where needed. You can share your project results with us, and we will share your stories with the public through our different channels. Be local youth heroes and inspire others to learn to co-exist as well!
For youth aged 9 to 18 (youth do not have to be in 4-H). Please bring a water bottle and sack lunch. Parents are welcome to stay and observe.
