The University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources seeks an academic Assistant Project Scientist to carry out research and extension education and make significant and creative contributions to alfalfa irrigation research in California with a focus in the San Joaquin Valley. This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program in alfalfa water use efficiency and the related interface of agricultural, economic, and ecological aspects of alfalfa and forage production on California’s irrigated farmland.


Programmatic Competence

  • Designing and implementing field research including, but not limited to, field trails on yield and quality of alfalfa and other crops planted in alfalfa production systems under different irrigation regimes, laboratory measurements of soil physical properties and other characteristics.
  • Modelling crop growth and development in relationship to crop water use and water management.
  • Analyze data and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals as well as in non-technical formats.


  • Present research at professional society meetings.
  • Coordinate outreach and extension around research in cooperation with project directors.

 Collaboration, Teamwork & Flexibility

  • Collaborate with federal and state governmental agencies by providing science-based information around intermountain restoration.

  • Maintain a program of continuous self-improvement by participating in in-service training, seminars, workshops, work group & program team meetings, short courses, professional society meetings and other relevant opportunities.

This position is located at 9240 S. Riverbend Avenue Parlier, CA 93648. 


Required Qualifications:

Programmatic competence

  • An earned Ph.D. in agricultural engineering, irrigation, agronomy, or closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
  • Strong statistical and quantitative skills.
  • Experience in experimental design, managing field research and leading field crews in research implementation.
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed research in high impact journals.


  • Skills to communicate and extend technical information to diverse audiences.

Collaboration, Teamwork & Flexibility

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member with other professionals

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with proposal development and familiarity with project planning and assessment tools and strategies.

The Project Scientist position is a non-career track, full-time, academic position.  The position is a one-year renewable term appointment (up to three years total) with a merit cycle every two years.  The performance in the position will be evaluated annually.  The position will be extended based on performance and availability of funding.
