The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), a statewide program with local development and delivery, is seeking the following UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) advisor.
Location Headquarters. UC ANR Intermountain Research and Extension Center, Tulelake, CA
Purpose. The Ag Engineer Advisor will implement an extension education and applied research program to address high needs in relation to integrating and adapting new technologies related to mechanization, automation, and precision farming into Intermountain cropping systems.
The focus will be irrigated field crops, vegetables, and specialty crops grown in the Intermountain Region of Northern California. The work will support crop diversification and infrastructure modernization, expand organic production, and develop better on-farm decision support tools to overcome several economic and environmental challenges.
The advisor will serve as the regional lead for integrating new farm machinery, irrigation equipment, and new technologies into current cropping systems. High priority subject areas include soil management, farm labor, pest management, and automation. The advisor will be expected to work cooperatively with industry, producers, and UC investigators to 1.) help industry adapt new equipment and technology to Intermountain cropping systems and 2.) create collaborative synergistic relationships with private and public partners. Examples of potential cooperative projects include investigating new mechanical/robotic weeding equipment for organic vegetable production, testing new harvesting techniques for intermountain hay, adapting drip irrigation systems to intermountain crops, and comparing new diagnostic tools to improve in-season crop fertilization. The Advisor will be housed at the Intermountain Research and Extension Center (IREC). The home counties will be Siskiyou and Modoc County. The advisor will be expected to provide regional support to the Intermountain region which includes Lassen County, Plumas-Sierra Counties, and Eastern Shasta County.
Counties of Responsibility. This position is focused on the Intermountain region. There is opportunity to work collaboratively across counties.
Education: A minimum of a Master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering or other closely related fields is required at the time of appointment.
- Live within a commutable distance of the position headquarters during period of appointment.
- The CE Advisor must possess or obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License prior to applying or supervising the application of any pesticide.
- Passion and desire to pursue a career in Extension and community development.
- Experience in successful Extension programming or community development,
- Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, manage teams and implement a research program, including setting measurable goals and objectives.
Salary & Benefits
